The study course is intended for students without any preliminary knowledge of Latvian. It is designed in a way that allows students to acquire basic reading, writing, and speaking skills that are necessary for elementary everyday communication at level A1. The course is divided into six topics, each of them gives students an example of a different real-life situation: getting acquainted, studying, choosing a profession, rural and city life, interests, hobbies, visiting a library, Latvian traditional cuisine, shopping, etc. The course material covers communication phrases, required vocabulary, and grammar.

The course has been developed for the FORTHEM Digital Academy and is designed for self-paced studying, except the speaking practice which is organized in the form of online classes.

The course is designed in accordance with the content specifications of the A1 level requirements adopted by the Council of Europe.

In the Spring semester 2026, course starts on 2 March. Speaking lessons are planned for 9 April, 14 May, and 18 June from 17:00 to 18:30 CET / 18.00 to 19.30 EET. After each topic, an additional session/consultation with the teacher will be organized.
