What if the messiness and unknowability of art is exactly what society needs right now?
The 10 ECTS course "Art in Society: Exploring and creating practices" course is interdisciplinary and open to all students who find an interest for the relationship between art and society. Whether you study urban planning, business, performing arts or something completely else, your unique competence will be valued in the supplementary competence teams, where our students will collaborate. The course provides a basic introduction to different approaches in socially engaged arts, skills in co-creation, ethical considerations, and methods for developing projects. The learning materials have been specifically curated for this course and include interviews and lectures by 32 experts based at universities and cultural institutions across Europe.

The teaching is organized as team-based learning and features a combination of flipped classroom with self-study of videos, literature, and podcasts, followed by structured group work and assignments.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students shall:
- be able to explain basic terms, concepts and theories related to the multidisciplinary field of Socially Engaged Arts
- be able to compare and contrast diverse ways, goals and contexts of Socially Engaged Arts-practices
- be able to prepare and design a Socially Engaged Arts-project
- be able to explain co-creation and ethical concerns in Socially Engaged Arts-practice
- be able to identify and explain their position and competence for creating art-practices in society.
Each work period begins with
- phase 1: individual preparation (flipped classroom), where the students engage with learning objects, such as videos, podcasts, literature and reflection questions. This individual preparation phase is followed by
- phase 2: a structured process with group discussions, a quiz and a mandatory seminar. The work period is concluded by
- phase 3 that features a mandatory assignment (individual or group) and a self-evaluation-task. Parts of the lessons are mandatory. These will be presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.
